This position works closely with the President, Board of Directors, Committees of the Board and senior staff to set overall organizational policies and priorities. Works with senior volunteers to develop long-term goals, policies and strategies to ensure successful operations, and analyzes the implications of proposed actions and decisions by individual areas on the whole of the organization.

Assists other leaders both directly and by putting them in contact with others who share their passions and from whom they can learn and by helping them to understand the support that organizational change initiatives need from them.

This position shall report to the president and serve on the UNA-NCA board and executive committee. Per UNA-NCA’s bylaws, a person shall hold office for two years in this role and may serve no more than two consecutive terms in the same office.


Major Responsibilities


The Vice Chair of Strategy and Operations’ key responsibilities include the following:

  • Serves as the lead executive committee member that monitors progress of the strategic plan, reports on whether key initiatives are performing as expected, and identifies major gaps between performance and vision.
  • Helps drive and influence strategic decision-making at the executive committee and board level.
  • Serves as a member of the executive committee and board, including responsibility for helping to shape agendas and focused meetings that involve integration of cross-cutting programmatic and operational issues.
  • Analyzes and presents key strategic issues to senior staff and volunteer leadership.
  • Works with others to develop processes that ensure appropriate prioritization and approvals for strategic initiatives.
  • Leads the organization’s strategic planning and work planning processes and ensures appropriate integration of cross-divisional work.
  • Assists the President in ensuring the productivity, accountability, and well-being of staff.
  • Ensures that cost effective operations and infrastructure are in place to support all staff and volunteers.
  • Ensures that strategies are clearly understood by all stakeholders and that the organization is achieving its strategic goals at the optimum pace.


Strategic Leadership:

  • This position will build strategies, facilitate planning sessions and drive change activities required to maintain operations and competitiveness and meet the needs of stakeholders.
  • This position should keep regular contact with UNA-USA to ensure alignment with national strategic direction.


Operations:

  • Responsible for supporting the President and board through strategic and operational planning guidance and by ensuring that required infrastructure and support services are in place.
  • Serves on the UNA-NCA human resources advisory workgroup.
  • Serves as a liaison between staff and the board on operational issues, such as legal, human resources and technology.
