The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) is a not-for-profit membership based organization that works to build knowledge, visibility and support for the United Nations, its specialized agencies, and its relationship with the United States. The Advocacy Committee is responsible for pursuing policy from the global to local level, advancing United States implementation of global policy goals and ensuring inclusive sustainable development outcomes.

UNA-NCA is accepting applications for the role of Legislative Assistant for its Advocacy Team. This position is a  3-month, part-time, unpaid internship available to both current students (undergraduates and graduates) and recent graduates. The Legislative Assistant will have the opportunity to participate in Congressional meetings, advocacy trainings, professional development/networking sessions, and more exclusive opportunities to engage with UN leadership.

20-32 hours/week


The Legislative Assistant will work closely with the Advocacy & Outreach Coordinator Rafaela Demerath, the Co-Chair of the Advocacy Committee Danielle Dean, as well as the Vice Chair of Advocacy Gayatri Patel to develop innovative and engaging opportunities for advocacy.

Job Duties

Legislative:

  • Tracking, reviewing, and potentially drafting of legislation that advances the United Nations' agenda and values of human rights and dignity
  • Keeping up with state and local policies in order to keep membership up to date and inform legislative agenda
  • Coordinating meetings with Congressional and municipal legislators

Communications:

  • Managing and editing the Advocacy Pulse to provide the latest on legislative news and updates from the Advocacy Team
  • Researching and writing for programs, one-pagers, and blog posts
  • Planning and coordinating Coffee Chats with support from the Advocacy team

Advocacy:

  • Preparing relevant talking points, issue briefs, and resource guides on key policies and issue areas
  • Facilitating advocacy workshops and trainings on advocacy in order to support UNA-NCA’s legislative agenda
  • Supporting advocacy campaigns that advance critical pieces of legislation in Congress and the DC Council

Skills and Experience

Required:

  • Detail-oriented, well-organized, and ability to balance multiple priorities
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Problem solver and creative thinker
  • Ability to work both independently and as a part of a team with minimal supervision
  • Experience with, or willingness to learn, Microsoft Word, Excel, Slack, Google Drive, Mailchimp, and Google Calendar

Preferred:

  • 1+ years’ experience in an office setting, handling day-to-day administrative tasks
  • Background or strong interest in state and local government and policy
  • Strong research, problem-solving, and creative thinking skills
  • Experience with Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, and Premiere
