UNA-NCA at the Rangel Summer Enrichment Program
By Peter Toto, Global Classrooms DC Program AssistantVeronica McIntire, Program Coordinator for the Summer Enrichment Program, began the session by briefly introducing each speaker. First was Gabrielle Gueye of Women of Color Advancing Peace, Security, and Conflict Transformation (WCAPS). She then Introduced Sarmat Chowdhury of the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area. Veronica described the panel as having a question-and-answer format. She would later ask a few general questions to the speakers directly and then defer to the Rangel scholars for a more direct Q&A session.

The UN, the US, and Me…
By Jill Christianson, UNA-NCA Board ChairWhile the United States and many other nations celebrated Pride this June, state sanctioned discrimination and violence against LGBTQ+ has expanded, especially in the form of legislation.
The global backlash on human rights has weaponized attacks on identity and diversity, curtailing the rights and freedoms of the most vulnerable. As the United Nations Human Rights Council convenes its 53rd Session, we must highlight the continued assault on LGBTQ+ rights. For me, this issue is international, national, and personal.

Coverage of the 2023 UNA-NCA Annual Meeting

In the following two hours, various speakers would highlight the incredible achievements from 2022 and 2023, but also explain what the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area will do in the next year.

The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area Announces Election of 2023-2024 Board of Directors
On June 13, 2023, the United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) announced its newly elected Board of Directors at the 2023 Annual Membership Meeting.Our congratulations to the candidates for their successful appointment. All of us at UNA-NCA look forward to working with them to strengthen public understanding and support for the United Nations.

It is with much sadness that we share the news of Ambassador C. Steve McGann's sudden passing on May 25, 2023. Ambassador McGann served initially on the UNA-NCA Advisory Council and later on the Board of Directors, serving as Vice Chair of its Resource Development Committee. He also served as the Co-Chair of the Women's Refugee Commission. During his leadership, Ambassador McGann initiated the Insider Briefing Series engaging in conversations with high level UN officials on pressing global issues, and serving as speaker and mentor to our Graduate Fellows Program.

UNA-NCA YP Women’s History Month Event
On March 29, 2023, the Young Professionals of UNA-NCA hosted a fireside chat for the 2023 theme for Women’s History Month, titled “Our Voices Are Our Strength: Women Storytellers.” This theme sheds light on women in the media is titled "Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories" as a recognition of women, past and present, who have been active in all forms of storytelling in the U.S. and worldwide. Furthermore, to recognize the impact of women who have been active in all forms of media and storytelling. Panelists will share best practices and tips related to storytelling and shed light on issues and groups often overlooked in the U.S. and globally.

Coffee Chat on Ending Online Gender-Based Violence
Advocates are often targets of bullying and harassment online, but there are unique challenges and dangers for women and girls. This session titled Champions and Allies: Ending Online Violence Against Women delved into efforts to integrate gender-inclusive strategies that address ending online violence and provide support to women and girls as advocates and leaders in public spaces.

Elimination of Discrimination Against Women Amendment Act of 2022 (EDAW) - in the Nation’s Capital
The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA), one of the largest and most active of 120 chapters of UNA-USA, welcomes the passage of B24-0649 - Elimination of Discrimination Against Women Amendment Act of 2022 (EDAW) which became effective on March 10, 2023. EDAW implements the principles of the Convention on the Elimination of all forms of Discrimination Against Women, known as CEDAW.

Global Engagement Summit 2023 Coverage

After three years, the UNA family celebrated its return to the UN Headquarters in New York for its Global Engagement Summit (GES) on Feb 17th, 2023. Not only was it marking our return to the General Assembly Hall, but the incredible speakers and accomplishments that have happened since the last in-person summit in 2019.
