The United Nations Association of the National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) is now accepting applications for the position of Board Chair-Elect, a five-month position that leads to election as Chair of the UNA-NCA Board of Directors with a two-year term, beginning at the time of the Annual Membership Meeting in June 2024.
The Board Chair will engage across the organization, enhancing UNA-NCA’s administrative, operational, financial, and programmatic foundations while leading the growth of the UNA-NCA as we continue to foster a strong U.S.-UN partnership. The Board Chair serves as a liaison to the Board of Directors and senior management, organizes and coordinates executive outreach and external relations efforts, and oversees special projects. The candidate must be an enthusiastic and seasoned leader and enjoy working within a small, entrepreneurial environment that is mission-driven, results-driven, and community-oriented.

UNA-NCA is a non-partisan, independent 501(c)(3) that works in partnership with UN agencies, the United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA), and dozens of partners in the Washington metropolitan region. UNA-NCA is one of the biggest and oldest chapters of UNA-USA.

Call for Applications for UNA-NCA Board Chair

The United Nations Association of National Capital Area (UNA-NCA), a nonpartisan 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization headquartered in the nation’s capital, is currently seeking a Board Chair-Elect to serve on its Board of Directors.

The Officers (UNA-NCA Executive Committee) meet every other month. The Board meets four times per year. Meetings and Events of the UNA-NCA are both in person and online. The Chair-Elect is expected to commit up to ten hours a week to the organization–with some weeks requiring more time (such as weeks of board or executive committee meetings) and others less. The Officers and Directors-at-large are expected to attend and participate in Board of Directors meetings (minimum of four per year). Meetings alternate between lunchtime and late afternoon/early evening hours to be inclusive of individuals with varying schedules.

According to the bylaws, Board members define the strategic direction for UNA-NCA to fulfill financial and managerial oversight responsibilities, volunteer time to UNA-NCA Committees, recruit members, help to identify new funding sources, assist in fundraising, and make annual gifts that represent a significant and meaningful commitment, with full appreciation for the person's financial ability and other obligations.



Qualifications:

  • Passion for a better U.S.-UN partnership and leading energetic volunteers in promoting the Global Goals in DC, MD, and Northern VA
  • Prior leadership experience in UNA-NCA or other peer groups
  • Robust support for the United Nations and its mission
  • Be self-driven with the ability to work as a partner to the UNA-NCA President, and self-manage in a flexible environment
  • Availability to commit to regular committee meetings, additional meetings with UNA staff, and potentially attend planning meetings related to events throughout the year.
  • Fundraising/development/grants experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Applicants DO NOT need to be a current member of the Board but must be/come a current UNA-NCA member. Applicants must comply with the Board Agreements on membership, participation, contributions and conflict of interest.


Competencies:

  • Strong leadership capacity: able to build a healthy board culture that builds trust and encourages candor with and among leaders, members, partners and staff. Experience with DEI planning or initiatives is considered a plus.
  • Strong organizational skills: able to prioritize and perform multiple tasks seamlessly while maintaining excellent attention to detail in a timely fashion.
  • Strong interpersonal skills: able to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders, including staff, board members, external partners and donors
  • Proactive: takes the initiative, asks questions, and looks to be helpful
  • Adaptable: able to fulfill a part-time commitment of 10+ hours per week, with the capacity to maintain a flexible schedule
  • Technological Proficiency: essential computer skills are helpful for the role, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Google Suite, and use of Zoom
  • Maintains discretion and confidentiality in relationships with all Board members and UNA-NCA staff.


Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate quarterly board meetings, and regular executive meetings, events, and roundtables.
  • Serve as an ambassador for the chapter at key events–both hosted and those for peer events–during the year (note: can designate proxy from board in event of scheduling issues).
  • Advise Directors and Officers in the development of committee events throughout the year.
  • Co-lead executive administration and stakeholder outreach.
  • Support the communications efforts within the Executive Office and within the Board of Directors.
  • Actively foster and maintain key internal and external relationships within the various working and standing committees and Officers of the organization at the local and national chapter levels.
  • Encourage, mentor, and develop Officers in support of their roles and responsibilities.
  • Support UNA-NCA efforts in advocacy, fundraising, and recruiting new members by supporting the development of outreach plans.

Note: The Board has adopted an annual contribution policy of $500 ($200 from each Board member and $300 “give or get”). The policy enables every Board member to be recognized as a Global Citizen in the UNA-NCA Annual Report. Board participation and compliance with this policy will be taken into account by the Governance Committee.
