Tell Congress to Fully Fund the United Nations
The United Nations Association, National Capital Area (UNA-NCA) joins UNA-USA and Better World Campaign in thanking Congress for passing a final appropriations package that continues to fully fund U.S. contributions to the regular budget of the United Nations. However, we do believe more can be done. UNA-NCA joins the Better World Campaign in recognizing that this is a time when millions of people are facing displacement and uncertainty caused by conflict, climate change and economic recovery from COVID-19. Congress decided to include a one-year prohibition on funding for UNRWA without any geographic or other carve outs. With more than 1 million people in Gaza facing famine – the highest number of people facing catastrophic hunger ever recorded – it is essential Congress and the Administration work together to find a solution and ensure the funding pause is lifted.
We as the United States must do more to help people most impacted by natural and man-made disaster. Furthermore we have the ability and responsibility to ensure our partners in these efforts have the resources they need.
Now that the FY-24 Budget is enacted, UNA-NCA calls on Congress to:
Ensure the full and expedient disbursement of available funds to the UN and its agencies.
Pass the FY-25 budget with full funding for UNRWA, UNFPA and Peacekeeping operations that further the peace, security and maternal health of people globally.
Renew its commitment to long-term diplomacy development priorities, especially strengthened support for the UN.
