Professor, American University's School of International Service
Shannon brings about 30 years of experience working across communities and organizations to help build a safer, healthier, more prosperous world. As a former Assistant Secretary General at the UN/Deputy Executive Director for UNAIDS and a career global health diplomat having worked bilaterally in senior positions at U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and U.S. Department of State, she is committed to the mission of UNA-NCA. At this time of UN80 reform and strained U.S.-UN bilateral relations, she would be privileged to play a more active role with UNA-NCA in advocacy for the future. From her American University roles (professor of international studies; former dean of the School of International Service), she brings a passion for and commitment to engaging young leaders to build this future. A medical doctor by training, she is board-certified in internal medicine, pediatrics, and infectious diseases and has worked clinically caring for kids and adults in the U.S. and abroad.
Vision Statement:
It would be her privilege to convene Council members on topical issues relevant to the UN, including the US’s positioning vis-à-vis the future of the UN. At this time of major shifts in the world order, it’s time to entertain bold ideas.
