Daniel Balke
Senior Social Development Specialist, The World Bank Group

Daniel Balke is a Senior Social Development Specialist working on community and local development, social cohesion, and fragility, conflict, and violence in the Social Development Global Department of the World Bank Group. Prior to this role, Daniel served as a Senior Policy Advisor to United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power, where he led the Agency’s policy engagement on multilateral development banks and contributed to its work on sovereign debt and fiscal policy in partner countries. Daniel joined USAID from an earlier stint at the World Bank, where he had most immediately served as a Strategy and Operations Officer in the FCV Group and as the FCV Country Coordinator for South Sudan, based in Juba. He previously worked on refugee and other cross-border issues in the World Bank’s Middle East and North Africa region, and as an assistant in the office of former WBG President Jim Yong Kim. Prior to joining the Bank, Daniel was an international economist at the US Department of the Treasury. He holds a PhD in political science from the University of California, Berkeley.
